Educational Outreach

Overview

Current successful outreach efforts include high school mentorship experiences, Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site programs and minority recruitment programs at both campuses, as well as a newly funded IGERT in Photonics at Arknsas. They are being supplemented by several new outreach efforts: summer salary for faculty at regional universities to work at the Center; a Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program for middle school and high school teachers; Web-based access to images of samples sent in by K-12 students; and outreach to the broader community through development of videos, DVD's, and science shows. The Center also collaborates with OKAMP (OU) and Carver Project (UA) programs to improve minority recruiting, retention, and placement.

The Center trains graduate students through hands-on experience with state-of-the-art research equipment; interdisciplinary, joint seminars, programs to develop entrepreneurial skills for engineers, and internships with industrial partners such as NTT and Lucent. Students are exposed to all aspects of the process from crystal growth to device production. Our goal is to produce students fully prepared to drive the advancement of nanostructures in academic and industrial settings.
